Learning #9 The Importance of Constructive Conflict in Relationships and Social Structures
According to John Paul Lederach:
“Conflict can be understood as the motor of change, that which keeps relationships and social structure honest, alive, and dynamically responsive to human needs, aspiration, and growth”
Conflict seems to be needed to change but also to humanize structures and improve relationships, assuming the conflict does not become destructive of course.
I've seen in the last years, maybe due to Corona that the number of conflicts specially at work has decreased maybe because we lost the relationships we had. I've also seen a decrease in engagement specially when using Chats or Emails.
Could it be that the use of technology in communication has led to a decrease in conflicts and engagement, causing the need for more constructive conflict in life to drive change and evolution.
I mean, we know that conflict will only make us feel bad. So why should I try to create conflict even if my goal is to improve processes? What is more important to me: peace or improving my processes?
I guess I need to think more about this buy my main learning is that we need more constructive conflict in our life if we want to change, improve our relationships and further evolve.
